Creating a social media content plan to suit the current climate

Mar 26, 2020

With many companies sending employees home to work or some operating with a skeleton work force, it is certainly a difficult and uncertain time for many people. The Covid-19 pandemic has ground many businesses to a standstill while some are trying to operate as normally as they can and at JBP we are continuing to support our clients and moving forwards.

It’s even more important now to use social media in a positive way. We have already seen so many great challenges set on Instagram stories as a way of connecting people. Just yesterday, a friend included me on a ‘push up challenge’ – while I think it is a great idea, I am not sure I am ready for that kind of humility!

Like so many others, over the last week we have been revisiting and amending several social media content plans for our clients to reflect the current situation. Here are a few top tips to help you revamp and update content plans while we handle this pandemic.

  1. Be sensitive

This is a truly challenging time and we have not had to deal with anything like this before, so we have to create content which is sensitive to the situation. You cannot continue to publish the content in the same way that you would do normally. No matter what the product or service you provide is, everyone is affected.

  1. Remember you are a business

Here is where we almost contradict ourselves. You have to remain true to your company so drip feed in a few posts about your service or product. Sometimes it’s actually quite a nice break on people’s newsfeed, especially when conversations about the pandemic are everywhere. Perhaps just tweak your wording slightly to remain sensitive to the situation.

  1. Remain positive

People come to social media as almost a way to escape and during the pandemic, this still remains the case. Try and produce content which is uplifting and potentially provides followers with something to do. For example, British Eventing recently produced a brainteaser for social media which gave the names of top event riders in emoji’s and followers had to guess the names of each rider. This was not only something fun to do but generated good engagement.

  1. Stay current

Keep up to date with Government statements and guidelines. You will probably have to amend a few posts almost daily due to the changing situation. It can reflect negatively or seem insensitive if you produce content which is no longer current.

  1. Don’t throw away good ideas

Don’t completely disregard your original content plan. The posts you initially created, providing they are relevant, can still be used, albeit at a later date. They may also provide you with a few ideas in the months to come or help you when you are short of content.
